Estancias jesuíticas

The Manzana Jesuítica, locted in Córdoba downtown, is an integrated area which enlarge “Compañía de Jesús” church, “Capilla Domestica” (the residence where the jesuitics used to live) and the Nacional University Presidency in Córdoba thar used to be the Maximum College of Jesus Company (Colegio Máximo de la Compañía de Jesus)-, the Main Library and Monsrrat National School

Back to 1599 the jesuitas settle down in a place provided by Córdoba´s Chapter that existed from 1589. This building wasn´t enough To shelter to religious, students and public inspectors. For it, from 1606 they begin the works of building that would give form to the current Jesuitical Apple. Successively constructions destined for the College join Máximo (1610), University (1622), Royal College Convictorio of Our Lady of Monserrat (founded in 1687 but installed in his current emplacement in 1782, after the expulsion of the Company) and Novitiate. The Church and the Domestic Chapel were constructed between 1644 and 1671. The former hermitage, one of the most ancient ecclesiastic constructions that remains in the country, constitutes the Sacristy of the Domestic Chapel.

All the Jesuitic Lams of Córdoba together with the others constructions of that period are an excellent example of the productive organization that this religious used to have in our country.

Although the main porpous of this lams was to give the economical support of the schools and some other studies places, they also took and importan part in the religiuos conquest of this order.

The Jesús Maria`s lams, Caroya, Santa Catalina, La Candelaria and Alta Gracia are able to be visited in a trip of 250km trough picturesque hill’s paths

Those rural buildings of XVII Century together with the Manzana Jesuitica, all of them historical national monuments, were declared Cultural World Heritage in the year 2000.
